Three Rules of Successful Consulting
Quite serious about this -- these are the guiding principles I think every consultant should follow.
1) Make your client look good.
No questions about this -- the more your client looks good, the more likely they are to look upon you with favour and keep you on.
2) Make your client as much money as possible.
Even if they really really want something, make sure that the client benefits from it. This translates to save your client as much money as possible, if you want.
3) Bill as much as you can.
If you take care of 1 & 2, the client will happily allow you to do 3.
Remember, your client isn't just the guy who you report to, but the whole client firm.
Follow these three rules, and in that order.

I thought the correct order was #2, #3, and then #1...

You can make all the money for your client you want, but if you can't make them look good when you do it, you won't be invited back...

we agree that all three are worthy goals, it's just the order of priority. but in the extreme case, are you saying one should choose #2 over #1?
1. make money for client without making them look good
2. make them look good without making them money

In the extreme case when it's a choice between 1) making money for the client without making them look good and 2) making them look good without making them money, I would still say that you do #1. Because if you make a shitload of money for your client but your client dumps you because they looked bad, then you can't fulfil rule #3.
Remember, client isn't the guy who hired you, it's the firm in general.

I'm sure you are good at point 1. Anyone standing beside you would surely look good, even Mussolini.
